WILL WE STOP IT?
Fourty years ago Richard Nixon declared war on cancer. There was confidence and optimism in the late 1990s.Then, in 2003, the National Cancer Institute director Andrew von Eschenbach declared that science would end the pain and suffering due to cancer by the year 2015. four years are left to see if his prediction will be right. Meanwhile cancer mortality rates have generally decreased somewhat in recent decades, but the rate isn't good enough to see that one day we might be cancer free. Funding for cancer research is higher than ever today. The question then, is whether we’ll get there in a couple of years. Today, scientist aren't exactly sure what triggers some types cancer in someone's body. They have the general idea, but still need to look deeper into the cells themselves. Maybe one day, a scientist will finally break the cancer code, and will realize what is needed to make it stop. Cancer is very different from many other sicknesses because it comes from the inside of someone. Not only do we need drugs to fight it but the person who has it needs a strong morale and the mentallity of never giving up. It is a fight that affects 31% of people all over the world, , this is why it is worth focusing our attention towards it and fighting together to destroy it. In my opinion, there is a concievable end for cancer. Looking at how quickly technology and medecines have improved in the last decade, it is easy to imagine a cure comming soon. Also, cancer is a huge prority for many people out there, and the money that is given for all the research, I believe, will one day pay off.
