History of Eye Cancer -The world's oldest documented case of cancer hails from ancient Egypt, in 1600 b.c.. Scientists do know how some type of eye cancer begin. They have discovered a genetic mutation in a gene called GNAQ that could be responsible for 45 per cent of the cases of uveal melanoma (eye cancer). The mutation to GNAQ leads to the activation of a signaling pathway that has previously been implicated in many other types of melanoma. But the scents mentioned: "Prior to our work, the mutations responsible for uveal melanoma were completely unknown,"
Causes - The major cause of eye cancer is too mch exposure to sunlight, or UV light. Also, HIV can also trigger cancer this is almost certainly because of the effect of the virus on their immune systems.
Treatments - There are various ways to treat eye tumors, depending on the diagnosis, size and aggressiveness of the tumor, and other factors. Certain small tumors may respond to laser treatment or freezing. If the eye cancer is advanced and must be treated aggressively or removed, plastic surgeons perform reconstructive eye surgery.
Symptoms - A growing dark spot on the iris, sensation of flashing lights, alteration in the shape of the pupil
blurring / loss of vision.
Statistics - An estimated 2,610 new cases of primary eye cancers will be diagnosed in the United States this year.
Primary eye cancers can occur at any age. Most cases occur in people age 50 or older. An estimated 270 Americans will die from cancer of the eye this year.Overall, about 3 out of 4 people with eye melanoma (cancer) survive for at least 5 years.
Types of Individuals the Cancer Affects - This usually affects people that have been living in a sunny environment sometime in their lifetime. It usually affects people who are 50 years old or older. It is proven that people with light colored eyes have a higher risk to having this cancer because more light is able to travel past there eye compared to a person with a darker colored eyes.
